Gun play or no gun play?

  1. I think this is a very sensible approach. Marieka and Madison, I think you've worked very hard and used lots of skills while making your 'guns'. Good work!

  2. Molly also made a gun that she was so excited about, it was painted with great care .She spent the rest of the afternoon shooting the "baddies" in the garden! What fun!

  3. Way to go Marieke and Madison! They are quite amazing looking guns!

Marieke had great fun showing her gun to her Daddy and brother that night.

It's interesting to see that children will make guns somehow! A few materials plus some imagination!

  4. I've heard of another kindy making the kids get a gun safety license (complete with certificate) to teach safe usage of imaginary guns for example not to be pointed at people or animals etc.

  5. What great guns - Marieka and Madison - very complex! Some children at Manaia have guns as part of their family culture - deer hunting, possum and rabbit culling. So this is what our children 'shoot' at Kindergarten. However as teachers we sometimes get into the spirit of things and crumple to the ground if 'shot'. I remember playing cowboys with my Dad in the sand-dunes as a child - I so enjoyed his act and we would cuddle and make up after our game. Its a great debate to have - thanks for sharing it. 6. I have been wondering about this as well, especially being in Qatar - the middle east! My children are 3-3.5 years old, and a lot of the boys love making guns. The teacher in the class before me had a strict rule of no 'fire' play and no guns because it is 'mean' and encourages more thought into what they are seeing on the news constantly - (So many articles are about the Iraq/USA conflicts). So personally am unsure aout whether to let it go on or not. I'm all for them developing their imaginations, especially seeing as it takes more thought to create a gun than a tower out of blocks. Thanks for sharing, I love reading about BDK! Inspires me and makes me think a lot.
