A tribute to Logan

Words cannot express the sadness in our hearts as we write this tribute to Logan. Logan passed away suddenly on 20/2/2010 as a result of an asthma attack at home. As we remember Logan we recall the vibrance he brought into our kindergarten and into our hearts. Everyone who met Logan remembered him. He would make himself known to visitors and engage them in conversation. He was always interested and interesting. He always had something of interest to say. Sometimes those comments were left of centre and thought provoking, sometimes they were funny but always they caring and polite. We called Logan a 'centred' child, someone who was comfortable in his own skin. He was self assured. He was confident. He enjoyed a joke and he always checked out all that was happening at kindergarten. He would have been devastated if he had missed out on anything that was going on. Most of all, the children loved him and he was always surrounded by friends. He loved to play in the sandpit and the water. He could often be found dripping his way to the bathroom! There are a number of entries on this blog celebrating Logan's learning and contribution to our kindergarten. We smile as we recall the emu egg he arrived with that provided the whole kindergarten with an omelette for morning tea. We chuckled at his enthusiasm to test out our new lithium battery drill. We were looking forward to following Logan's progress as he was to leave us to start school. We have known Logan since he was a baby; it is so very hard to believe that someone with such a big heart and vibrant personality is no longer with us. Our hearts go out to Kirsten and Dean, no words could express our sorrow. We have a wonderful community here at Botany Downs Kindergarten and their collective hearts are breaking. Rest in peace Logan.

For families wanting advice on how to address the subject of death with their children we have added some advice from Victim Support onto our website labelled 'grief'. On Monday morning we will have hard copies of these for you. As well, we will have our psychologist on site if anyone would like some further advise and support. Families are invited to share their thoughts and grief as we come together as a community to come to terms with this tragedy.

Please post your comments here on the blog. We will print them off and share them with the family, these comments are providing comfort at this point in time. As well, jot down your child's thoughts and comments. We have a board set up at kindergarten by the Mimio to put these on. These also will comfort the family and it will allow us to understand where your child is at and guide us in the support we can give to you and your child.

The family are happy for contact. The funeral is on Thursday at 11am at Manukau Gardens in Puhinui Road. Families are welcome to attend. It is an open casket funeral and children being able to draw on the casket. We will also be having a "celebrating Logan' time at kindergarten on Wednesday morning at 9.30am. We will let you know as we finalise details.

  14. Anyone that knew Logan would agree that he really was one of a kind. I have never met a child quite like he was, such a happy, caring little man.

Logan was the first friend Caden made at BDK. He took Caden under his wing, and soon they became the closest of mates, spending many hours playing at eachothers houses. We are going to miss having Logan over for afternoon tea after Kindy.

The world lost a little piece of sunshine the day you left us beautiful boy. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend to Caden, you will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts. We feel priveledged to have been a part of your life.

  23. Michael, Ruby and Poppy's Logan memories:
Michael said he loved playing with Logan at kindy in the sandpit and zooming the cars around the loop the loops & was always telling us how he was going to be Logan's friend at school & look after him.
Logan was Ruby's protector at kindy & even at the tender age of 4 Ruby & her friends were always talking about who would marry him, I think Logan loved their admiration of him.
Poppy, well it has to be the naked water play in the sandpit, of course Logan thought this was the most normal thing in the world as he loved being at one with nature too as he helped Poppy fill pots & pans.
We all loved you Logan you were such a kind special little boy & we will never forget you.
Ian will always remember shaking your hand, ruffling your hair & saying 'you're a good old boy' & having a chat with you & making eachother laugh.
I will just miss seeing your smiling face every day & our chats.
Kirsten, Dean, Grandad, Sophie & Dylan our hearts are breaking for you all we all feel very privelaged to have known Logan.

  25. i would like to express a number of thanks to people that have given support over the past two very traumatic days.
Firstly, I would like to thank Kirsten and Dean for their open sharing. we have always known that you are wonderful parents. we are honoured to be part of your 'family'.
Secondly, I would like to thank our team who came together immediately upon hearing the news... Kerry, Helen, Raelene, Kathie, Althea, Gillian, Lara, Rochelle and Karen. Our grief was overwhelming, but we were able to share our grief together.
Thirdly, I would like to thank Jacqui, our professional support manager and Vanesse our psychologist who joined us to support us.
As well, we would like to thank the parents of Botany Downs Kindergarten for their support as we tried to contact each parent in our community.
On Saturday we were joined by victim support who supplied the handouts that we uploaded to the webpage. We gathered all things Logan together for the family.
On Sunday we all met together again with the trauma team from the Ministry of Education as they outlined the support they can offer ourselves and families.
We have set up a space for children to make something for Logan if they wish.
We hope that we have many systems in place and can now deal with all that might come our way with children's questions.
Thank you so much for understanding and support.
    Thank you

Just heard the devastating news and am so sad.
Reading through the comments I cannot help but think how very proud you must be of your little man...he was so much to so many.
How many times did I read that Logan had been the first friend or smiling face they had seen when their child started kindy. It was just the same when Mia started. Logan just came up and started talking, introducing himself and asking questions. He even looked out for Mia's little brother Josh; it was just his way.
What a big void Logan has left, but even more memories and smiles. He was a big character with an even bigger smile. I can only imagine what an amazing brother Logan has been. Our thoughts and warmest wishes are with you.

Don't think of him as gone away -
    His journey has just begun
    Life holds many facets
    The Earth is only one
Just think of him as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think how he must be wishing
    That we could know today
    How nothing but our sadness

You had set your heart on being in my class way back when Sophie was in Year 1. Patiently we both waited for the day when you would be a Room 9 kid too. I was so excited to see you and your Mum on Thursday for your school visit and to show you around the classroom...but it turned out that it was more a case of you exploring and asking me questions than me showing you! When I visited you this afternoon I gave you a Room 9 Star Person Badge. The Star Person helps the teacher and looks after children who are sad. Logan, you would have made a wonderful star boy. I am so glad you got to be in my class if only for a morning, and, as one of my children said to me today "Logan can always look down at us through the skylights" and so you can check out what your class is up to.

You will be a Room 9 Star Boy forever.

Love Miss Cotman (your teacher) xoxo

To Kirsten, Dean, Sophie and Dylan,
My thoughts are with you all at this very difficult time. Room 9 misses the classmate they never got to play with in the playground, but they all agree "Thursday was a lucky lucky day for Logan cos he got to be a school kid". The door to Room 9 will always be open for you and the skylights kept clean for your Star Boy :-)

    Love Miss Cotman xoxo

  60. It is hard to find the words to let you know how sorry we are for your loss.
Logan was one of Olivia's first friends when she started afternoon kindy. He always said, 'Hello' and made everyone feel welcome.
He was such a character - always happy and always caring for others.

To Kirsten, Dean, Sophie and Dylan, hold tight to the wonderful memories of you precious son and brother.
He was one of a kind and will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him

Our thoughts are very much with your family at this very sad time.
Logan was the most friendly, kind and caring boy we met at kindy. He always had a lovely smile, said hello and good-bye and we loved it when he stopped for a chat. Sean had so much fun playing in the sandpit and water with Logan and still remembers the time he played with Logan at the Bunnings playground with his cars. We will miss Logan and remember him always.

  65. A gorgeous little man with a matching personality. When I asked Gypsy what she would miss about Logan she said, "he was cool and sooo not mean." She will miss playing with him and I think everyone will miss that sweet smile that Logan always had ready for anybody. He touched a lot of people and even my husband (who likes to think of himself as a hard nut) was reduced to tears when I told him of the tragedy. What a special guy. Rest in peace Logan and you'll never be forgotten.

  66. Where do you begin?!?
It is still with disbelief that I consider the fact that Logan is no longer with us. What an unbelievably wonderful boy he was and still continues to be. His exquisite smile never failed to make my heart melt. He had such a natural skill with people - just read all of the comments above! This can only be described as a gift. The essence of Logan can only be captured by actually knowing him but it gives me great comfort to look at the hundreds of photos of him and savour the vibrancy captured in those shots! Those dimples are truly something else!

It truly was a privilege knowing him - thank you so much to Kirsten, Dean, Sophie and Dylan for sharing your precious Logan with us, we truly are richer for knowing him. Thank you also for opening your home to our community. It has been such a generous gesture once again. You are such a special family. It's no wonder you were blessed with such special children.

I know that Logan's life was not in vain, we can all learn so much from him. He got what it means to live life to the fullest and not to waste a moment. Delight in the small things and don't hold grudges - life's too short to make enemies. He understood that this life was never meant to be lived selfishly. A life truly lived is a life filled with love that is unselfishly, unashamedly and freely given with no strings attached. If we all tried to be a little bit more like Logan, this world would be a better place for sure!
Logan, thank you for being my teacher.
You'll always be in my heart.
I love you our gorgeous boy!

We only met Logan on a couple of occasions but often commented what a memorable little boy he was. He was so vibrant and full of life and so interested in everything around him. He seemed to have wisdom far beyond his years and talked to us "oldies" on a level far beyond the years of a 4 year old.
We feel so much sympathy for you all and cannot even imagine what you are going through at this sad time. We do sincerely hope that your precious memories will help you through.

  72. We are Boogies older cousins Kate and Anna.
We occasionally came up to the kindy to drop off or pick up Boogz and see what he got up to. He loved everything about Kindy, the sandpit, the toys, activities, playground, animals and people - both staff and friends. He was so proud to show it all off to us!
We would like to thank Botany Downs Kindy for everything they have done for our family at this sad time and for always making us feel welcome.

We are so happy to know that our beautiful Boogie Boy made you all as happy as he made us. He was so special and we are going to miss him heaps.

  73. Dear Kirsten,Dean and family,
What a tragic tragic loss of such a gorgeous little boy. Logan was such a bright shining star - he really did light up a room when he was in it. I can only imagine the heartbreak that you must be feeling right now, but have comfort in knowing how incredibly missed your little man will be by many many people - he was very very special - I think heaven must have needed another angel and Logan has taken up that position.
May God wrap his loving arms around you all and comfort you at this extremely sad time.

  78. My dear Logan, your sudden and premature departure for our world has made such a huge impact on us all. Your life although short was filled with so much joy and in turn you made all our lives so wonderful. I recall your first day at morning kindergarten, you embraced everything there was on offer, your smile just melted my heart, your presence was so amazing, as was your gentle way with other children and adults alike.

Only last week you were your beautiful manners asking me to help you get the ear muffs down from the carpentry cupboard, you had a plan in mind and you set to work making an amazing wooden piece of art. You are an awesome young man and continue to capture our hearts, when we came to visit you Rhea said, “you looked cute” I am so very sorry I will not get to see your beautiful smile again, but I know your spirit will always be with us.

It has been a privilege and a real pleasure getting to know you.

Take care our very, very special, unique Logan. Love always Gillian, Chris, Ruth and Rhea
